Sleightless Four
What ? This is a four of a kind production, yes, the world need another four of a kind production. I always been fond of four of a kind production, this is a named four of a kind production from a shued deck, the spectator could name any four of a kind, the spectator cut the deck into four piles, and the card was shown that there is indierent card on top of each piles, however a second later, the named four of a kind are materialized on top of each piles.
A Bit Story This This four four of a ki kind nd prod produc ucti tion on is in insp spir ired ed by th the e vene venera rabl ble e Jennings revelation, which I believe appear in the classic magic of arry Jennings, however it is a very diicult routine which need a technical mastery of certain sleight, it involves palming, and this is a blu Jennings revelation, not e!actly the same but I believe it would have "almost# the same eect in the mind of the spectator. $nother inspiration is from the new book from %it &artling, In 'rde 'rderr to $maz $maze, e, in wh whic ich h he desc descri ribed bed a rout routin ine e wh wher ere e any any named four of a kind are suddenly appe ppear on top of four randomly cut packets, involves a memorized deck of course, in this routine I oer my impromptu solution.
Method Overview
(leight needed ) *one +ou need to be able to cull of a kind to the top of the deck invisibly, I use a sleightless cull procedure by John -annon, slightly modied, I will e!plain later.
The Routine (tart with the deck on the table "/oberto 0iobbi always said that the best place for a deck of cards in on the table#. $sk the spectator to name his favorite number from 1 to 12, I use the very clever gambit by 3ani da 'rtiz, in which he said 4 I want you to name your favorite number from 1 to 12, for e!ample5 4. $s 3ani said, this 4for e!ample6 ruse is very important, it makes spectator think that the 7uestion is not important, however you now get the re7uired information, you know the spectator selected number, now you proceed to cull the four of a kind. Downjog Cull To cull the four of a kind you will do the down8og "in 8og# cull, the description of this sleight is in /oberto 0iobbi 9ard 9ollege volume , this is a sleightless way to cull of a kind, I believe this is one of the best "in my opinion# and the easiest, I have done this cull for a long time, although I can also do :ostya :imlat roadrunner cull very well, I still use the down8og cull a lot in my performances. John -annon also utilize this cull procedure in his routine, I read about this cull in his book 3ear ;r
*ow, the mechanic, basically hold the deck facing toward yourself, and spread through the deck until you see the rst of a kind card "target card > we use aces for e!ample#, now you take all the card from the face until the rst target card, the ace, and in8og all of them, now you continue spreading until you see the ne!t card, the second ace, in8og it also, continue spreading, in8og the third card, and continue spreading until you see the last card, and in8og the last card. (o the cards that are in8ogged should be > spread of indierent card > 1st $ce > ?nd $ce > 2rd $ce and th $ce. *ow the deck is divided into two portion, the up8ogged portion "the top portion# > containing no target cards "no $ces# and the bottom portion > containing the target cards "$ces#, now strip out the up8ogged portion "the top portion# and place it onto the face of the packet your holding, now automatically the $ces are positioned on top of the deck. +ou have successfully culled four of a kinds to the top of the deck sleightlessly.
*ow you have the four of a kind on top of deck, continue by giving the spectator another chance of shue, I usually patter about the destiny of a deck of card, 4you know, the destiny of human rely on mystery, however, the destiny of this deck of card rely on your hand entirely, you decide the fate of this @? printed pasteboards, etc etcA6, *ow give the deck to the spectator and ask him to shue the deck, but you will do the /emote /osetta (hue by John -annon, I read it from his amazing book 3estination Bero. Remote Rosetta Shue To be e!plained brie=y, this shue was originated from ennart 0reen famous rosetta shue where the deck is divided into ? packets and both packets is arranged in a spiral conguration
and then pushed together, it resembled the form of a rie shue. -annon use this shue in his book to control slug of cards on top of the deck, by cutting the top portion of the deck to the right bigger than the bottom portion, arranged the packet in a spiral conguration by spinning the center of the packet, then ask the spectator to push both packet together. -ecause the top porting "the right packet# is bigger than the bottom portion, when the packet pushed together the slug on the top of the deck which in this case the any named four of a kind will stay on top of the deck, (o we manage to give the illusion that the spectator may freely shue the deck but still controlling the position of the four of a kind.
Cutting to Any !amed " o# a $ind *ow the situation is perfect, you have of a kind controlled on top and you have asked the spectator to further shue and mi!ing the deck by using the rosetta shue, now you are ready to cut the deck into four random packets. To do the rst two cuts I use the cut used by $ldo 9olombini in one of his tapes 4The Cssentials of $ldo 9olombini6 by n publishing volume 1, in his routine 40rand %ri!6, in which he produced aces to start the routine. The mechanic is like this, you rie of the top two cards with your thumb, maintain a thumb break "yes this is semi automatic card tricks but I guess you could hold a thumb break donDt you5#, now cut the deck in half and put the top half on the table, immediately take back the two top cards above your thumb break, and add it to the remaining portion in your hand, now table the bottom portion in your hand and position it diagonally to the left and behind the top half portion. *ow you have two
packets on the table, the top half, and the bottom half diagonally to the left behind the top half packet. *ow you will ask the spectator to cut the packet into two piles. $sk the spectator to cut the top half into two packets, and place the cut portion to the left.
9heckpoint )
*ow you should have two aces on top of packet $, and two other aces on top of packet 3, on top of packet - and 9 are indierent cards. The ne!t step is reminding the spectator about their favorite number, the shuing and cutting procedure acted as a time misdirection, now the spectator should feel as they are told you the number for the rst time, here is how I asked the
spectator 4mmmA wait a second, what was your favorite number from 1 to 1256 "as if you didnDt heard the rst time, this is a thing from 3ani da 'rtiz, he used it in one of his routine called the imaginary dice#, wait for the spectator to answer. *ow we proceed to showing indierent cards on top of each pile, I usually say something like this 4 If weDre lucky enough maybe we have something special on top of each pileA6 , to reveal indiferrent cards with your right hand take the top card of pile - and with your left hand take the top card of pile 9 , now bring those two card slightly higher to your face to reveal its identity, this also provide misdirection for misplacing the card a second later, now put the card back, but put the card in your left hand on top of packet $ and put the right hand card on top of packet 3. *ow continue revealing the top card of packet - and 9, with your right hand reach and take the top card of packet - and with your left hand reach and take the top card of packet 9, reveal it and bring it slightly higher to your face and place them on top of their respective packet. *ow you have successfully shown indiferrent cards on top of each packet. $sk the spectator, 4can you see something special within this four cards56, the spectator will say no, and you also look disappointed as apparently the trick isnDt working, pause and act accordingly, now you will put back the card into facedown position, however you will misplace the card as follow. This should be done casually and in obeat as spectator think that this trick doesnDt go as you planned. -asically youDll 8ust do the same gesture in reverse, but slightly dierent. Take the card in pile - with your left hand and take the card in pile 9 with you right hand, and put back the left hand card in pile 9 and put back the right hand card in pile -, so the card is placed facedown but the position is crossed from pile - to pile 9 vice versa "this is done to enhance the optical illusion and provide misdirection#. 9ontinue by taking the card in pile $ with your right hand and
the card in pile 3 with your left hand, now bring the card slightly higher to your face, turn the face down, and then place the right hand card on top of pile - and the left hand card on top of pile 9.
